Beware of cash buyers on the spot. They are middlemen who buy your dental scrap for a few hundred dollars, which might seem convenient at the time. But the reality is that the value of your dental scrap can be much higher for two reasons:

They don’t know the real content of precious metals on your dental scrap. They follow a “weigh and pay” approach, which is basically guessing the value of the scrap without real knowledge of the percentage of precious metals and different alloys, which can be worth a lot. Dental offices are losing the most money because of this practice.
Then, there are the fees that they take for themselves. As we said above, they are intermediaries, who have to go to a refiner after buying your scrap and earn the price difference. Why not just skip this step and go directly to the refinery?

In other cases, refineries themselves send a representative to your dental office to inspect the scrap and pay you right there for it. No matter how expert this representative is, there is absolutely no way to know the real value of your dental scrap without assaying the materials. I used them for our dental office scrap metal. I called and the sent collection jar and emailed me a shipping label. Once I sent it in, they had a system set up to make an account and I was able to follow along on the portal. There are different types of dental scrap or dental gold buyers. Cash buyers on the spot are people who offer to buy your dental scrap at the moment without assaying it. Of course, it can seem convenient at the time to get some quick cash for materials you might otherwise throw away, but based on our analysis, you might actually be losing over 70% or more of the value of your dental scrap.

Even if you have a smaller 24-karat gold cap, a dental bridge made of 20-karat gold may be more valuable.

How much gold is in a dental crown?

A gold crown normally contains about one-tenth of an ounce of gold or about 3 grams. Considering that the average gold crown uses 16 karat gold, the price of one gold crown with today’s market prices is around $105 (January 10, 2022). The reality is that dental gold can go from 10 to 22 karat, and this gold is usually mixed with other precious metals that could raise the value of your gold crown. Learn more about dental gold value.

What is the real value of gold crowns?

Sadly, there is no easy way to know the real content of gold and other precious metals in your dental crowns. You can get an estimate of the price if you know the karat of the gold used, but generally, people don’t have this information.

The absolute best thing you can do is send your gold crowns to a specialized dental refiner, who will melt the precious metals and assay to know the real value.

What is dental Refiner?

In this case, a dental refiner is nothing more than a precious metal refiner that is specialized in dental scrap refining. How to find the best dental refiner.

All precious metal refineries will tell you that they refine dental scrap, but not many of them are specialized in this niche. First, dental professionals were selling their dental scrap to a cash buyer on the spot who presented at their offices and paid, for example, $200 for a jar full of dental scrap, which has an actual value between $1,000 and $10,000. These cash buyers would then go to a dental refinery and gain the difference in price, the dentists earning 20% of the value in the best case.

Second, some refineries worked directly with the dental offices and paid slightly more to earn their business, but then did a similar practice as cash buyers, knowing that the margin was huge between what they paid and the actual value of the scrap, but they kept that information from the customers and got the most profit.

The third scenario was that palladium was being left out of the picture for refining. It can’t be recognized by the naked eye, so cash buyers would tell dentists that they pay only for metals containing yellow gold, and direct refiners didn’t provide palladium results or they hid the content they found, so they both made a huge earning from it without dentists even knowing the value of their scrap. Even worse, because they were badly advised by their suppliers, dental offices would throw away precious pieces of palladium because it looks like every other metal, and they would think it was titanium or steel, which don’t have market value. Palladium has been one of the most used metals for implants, most PFM and dental alloys have it, so dental professionals were losing a great deal of money.
