- Collect their Dental Scrap
Did you know that by throwing away your dental scrap you are throwing away thousands? Yes, it’s true. This material is worth collecting. Plus it’s very easy to collect this material; all you need to do is request a FREE collection container and email or call when you’re ready to schedule your pickup. That’s all it takes!
2. Stop Using A Cash Buyer
A “cash buyer” if the person(s) that comes into your office asking to buy the dental scrap. This person is used by many dental practices because it is convenient. However, they are paying you at least 50% – 100% less on the dental scrap than what it is worth. Why are they paying you less? Simply because they are “eyeing” the material and giving you a rough estimate of what they think it is worth. The only way to know the true value of the material is to conduct a Fire Assay, and that is done in a laboratory. Plus a “cash buyer” needs to make a profit, and they typically pay you nothing or a little bit on the porcelain-fused-to-metal or “whitish” crowns. These do have precious metals, and in order to get the value for them, you should send them into a refiner.
- Ask The Right Questions Of Your Refiner
Asking the right questions is crucial when working with a refinery. You’d be amazed at how many refineries do not have an on-site laboratory or charge you fees for processing the scrap. It’s very important that you understand where your material is going and that they are providing you with the greatest value for your dental scrap. It may seem like “pennies” but in most cases, there is a difference of 50% or more in what they pay you for the material.
- Try Out A New Refiner
We understand many dental practices have a refiner in place, and we don’t want you to drop them. All that we encourage is that you try out Core Scientific. Actually, we suggest that dental practices test us out by separating out (equally) their dental scrap and send lot A to your current refiner and lot B to Core Scientific. 100% of dental practices that have tried us out this way have stayed with us. What other business would advocate for you to test us out in this way if we aren’t confident that your refund will be higher with us.
- Get Your Office Manager Involved
A lot of the dentists we work with transfer responsibility, of the dental scrap, to their office managers. This helps streamline the collection and shipping of the dental scrap. This is the easiest step in the process. All you need to do to request a Free collection container is to contact me either via Phone 877.308.2388, email firstname.lastname@example.org or simply go here and fill out the form.
- Schedule Your Pickup Time
Once you have filled up your collection container, all you need to do is contact me to schedule your pickup. You will have the return-shipping label already in the collection container. So all you need to do is place the shipping label on, and wait for FedEx to pick up. It’s that easy.
- Choose How To Use Your Return
Now’s here is the fun part. Figuring out how to use your return. Here are a few suggestions: employee party, customer giveaway, new dental equipment, advertising, donating to charity, updating your dental office, employee training, and certification – to name a few.
Life is all about making decisions and choosing the best option for our business and our community. Today there are a lot of choices to make, and sometimes you stay with the same company because “the salesman was nice” or “they gave me a good refund” or simply “they are a non-profit”. However, we rarely have the time to reflect on our choices and take a look at the final result.
That’s why I implore you; actually strongly encourage you to take a closer look at your current recycler. Why? Simply because this one step can make a great impact on the charity you donate your return to.
Charities make a difference both – Big and Small! From funds for flowers to be in every room at the hospice care or big changes such as the $220 million captured by the Ice Bucket Challenge for the ALS foundation.
Your charitable donation may be small, and even though that is making an impact, a larger donation can make an even larger impact. That’s why you should take notice that many recyclers are paying you little for your dental scrap, actually 50% less (in most cases much more). Yes “every little bit helps” but what if I told you that the 50%, you should have gotten, could have been donated to St. Jude’s for a family to visit their sick child or free mammograms for low-income women.

Office Parties & Outings
Letting your employees know they are doing a good job is a great way to boost motivation and morale. Throwing a party shows that you appreciate the work that they are doing. This may be a holiday party, birthday/work anniversary celebration, or just because! If an office party isn’t necessarily an option, you can always plan a work outing. Should I give the dental extractions back to the patient?
I have worked in this industry, for quite some time, and in my conversations with Dentists and Oral Surgeons, I advise against giving the extracted dental crowns back to the patients – unless they request.
These dental crowns, whether gold/silver crowns or porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns, should not be handed over the patient because a pawn broker:
1). Will not give them anything for the PFM crowns
2). Will give them very little on the gold or silver crowns
Simple, it isn’t worth their time to take them back. However, I understand if a patient requests them back. I’ve had dentists and oral surgeons actually collect the dental extractions; send them to refinery, and give the return back to the patient. In my opinion, this is a better option, only if a patient asks for the crowns back.

Do you handle dental extractions?
Yes, then you have removed at least a few PFM crowns. If you are not collecting these crowns, you should be. Many of the dentists that we have spoken with have been throwing PFM crowns away unaware how valuable these crowns can be. Even more, they aren’t sure which PFM crowns to collect.
I’m here to help you determine which PFM crowns to collect.
PFM or “whitish” crowns, as they are commonly called, can contain precious metals such as gold, palladium and/or platinum. These metals are very valuable. Sometimes – like in the image below – you are able to see this metal once you extract the tooth. This makes it easy for you to determine whether to collect.
However, there are some PFM crowns that do not contain precious metals. They can be harder to differentiate without sending them in to the refinery. These PFM crowns (without precious metals) just contain the tooth with the porcelain overlay. However it’s important to let you know that if you’re unsure it’s always best to throw in everything.
Again I want to emphasize that you shouldn’t be throwing away these crowns.
